Digital Painting : An 8-week course on the basics of painting digitally for building strong art foundations

Conquer the digital art medium

This course is an introduction to digital painting and color composition for film and animation. With an emphasis on studying the works of old masters, students will discover the process of how to deconstruct the picture plane through film studies, reproductions of master works, and the widely used—but often understated—industry-standard technique of ‘Photobashing.’ Course work will cover color theory, perspective, and the use of brushes & textures in Photoshop (this includes: creating images of characters, props, or vehicles using photo overlays in Photoshop).

MATERIALS: Photoshop (or equivalent), drawing tablet (Wacom preferred)

SKILLS LEVEL: Intermediate

PREREQUISITES: Fundamentals of Design or good drawing foundation


WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

The more you know, the better.

Week 1 | Introduction to Photoshop & Movie Composition Study

Film composition for drama and story | Understanding cinematic lighting and composition | First students will familiarize themselves with Photoshop and its accompanying tools if unfamiliar with the program. Students will then choose several movies to use as reference for their film studies done in Photoshop.

Week 2 | Material Painting

This week a discussion on how to paint materials will be made where students will study diverse material renderings using the sphere technique. Interpretations of photographic reference of a variation of textures to develop an understanding of what elements make up specific textures as well as to continue to develop an understanding of Photoshop brushes.

Week 3 | Learning from the Masters

We will analyze how the traditional masters worked by doing master copies. Students are to do one master copy within the range of master painters described in the demo video.

Week 4 | Value Structure & Painting

Students will learn about the importance of value and value structures in painting. Analyze different lighting scenarios and study them using the value concepts in the lectures.

Week 5 | Painting with Color

Students will learn about color and analyze different works to see how color works. Using the previous weeks lighting guide, they will further develop a painting.

Week 6 | Finishing a Painting

We will cover how to finish a painting in color developed from previous week’s selected color rough. Study works from many artists to see how they handle colors, materials, texture, and values to help when finishing a painting.

Week 7 | Lighting, Color, & Mood

This week we will discuss lighting concepts and how it can alter the mood and color of a piece. We will look at films and animations to see how they handle these elements incorporated into a story.

Week 8 | Photobashing

Photobashing, students will learn industry techniques of photobashing and how to incorporate them in your previous week’s works. We will study works from video games artists in the industry that effectively use photobashing in their workflow. Let the photos do the work and inspire.
