Intro To Perspective
Intro To Perspective tutorial : Perspective is a class that introduces linear perspective systems, helping students to explore a variety of basic and complex laws that convey the illusion of dimensional forms in space on a two-dimensional surface. The goal is to get a working knowledge to design a space and then be able to draw various accurate views of it. Understanding that will give the artist a natural sense for perspective and be able to touch on subjects like visual narrative and point of view. By the end of the class, students should be able to intelligently position a camera or point of view of their choosing inside a designed world. | This class can be taken digitally or traditionally, but it is strongly suggested to take it digitally since all demonstrations will be done in Photoshop using a tablet. Students will be given access to a week 0 before the class starts to get familiar with Photoshop in case they are not confident with the software. If you still want to take the class using traditional media, please make sure to get the material listed before the class starts.
The more you know, the better.
- Week 1 | Intro to Perspective
How to identify 1-, 2-, & 3-pt perspective | Drawing to scale: referencing back to the horizon to match heights of objects and character | Demo: drawing a bedroom in one point perspective | Blocking out a scene with cubes and a floor grid
- Week 2 | 2-Point Perspective (Flat vs. Deep Space) / Poles, Stairs, & Elipses
How cone of vision and position of vanishing points effect distortion and different camera lenses | The telephone pole method of drawing in measured increments back into space | Ellipses and minor axis tilts | Stairs (vanishing point above and below the horizon)
- Week 3 | 3-Point Perspective
Third vanishing point and tilting | 3-point narrative | Drawing depth with details | Distance in perspective using levels of detail | Flat vs. deep space
- Week 4 | Thumbnails: Mini World Exploration
Think your way around a space using 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective | Camera angles and narrative | Process of thumbnailing
- Week 5 | Organics: Mini World Exploration 2
Drawing organic forms in perspective | Forms with wrapped texture and non-flat ground planes | Finish the mini world demo picking from one of the thumbnails
- Week 6 | Pans and Wide-Angles Shots
Long format drawing with bending or changing perspective | Horizontal and vertical panning | Truck in, zoom in or out | Repetition or texture to help depth
