Digital sculpture of fantastic creatures with ZBrush : Learn alternative 3D modeling techniques and methods to create a kraken , In the world of 3D modeling, specialists bring not only human characters and figures to life, but also creatures from a science fiction movie or video game. Luis Gayoso – 3D generalist – specializes in the creation of fantastic characters and has more than 15 years of experience as a digital artist and, since 2014, has devoted himself entirely to creature design, and in this course invites you to give your first steps in digital sculpture.

Designed to make you lose your fear of ZBrush, because you don’t need to be an expert to get great results, Luis will teach you in this course a simple methodology to design and model a kraken .

What does this course include?

You will start by meeting Luis Gayoso, who will tell you about his artistic training, his fondness for video games and how all this led him to the world of 3D creature design and modeling. You will know his main references and his motivations to be a digital artist as he is today.

Luis will give you a general introduction to ZBrush and will explain in detail the most important tools of the software. You will learn to configure the interface to work at ease and use it with confidence.

Next, you will start the development of the course project: modeling a kraken . You will begin to collect visual references to develop a conceptual proposal. Later, you will learn to create a draft of your sculpture using basic shapes and volumes, and then define the silhouette and proportion of your model through blocking .

Once you have your draft defined, Luis will give you a brief analysis of human and animal anatomy, in order to structure the model and define the most important anatomical features between the head, torso and different limbs.

Later, you will learn automatic techniques and tools that will help you add details and “microdetails” to your model, and to give it an incredible finish, Luis will teach you some simple methods to create an environment for your creature, achieving a more interesting composition.

To finish, you will work your model in a shading and lighting software called Keyshot, in which you can configure the light, the material and achieve a high quality render.

What is the course project?

You will make a proposal for a kraken , taking as a starting point the kraken of Clash of the Titans. At the end of the course you will be able to propose and structure your own fantastic creature.


To take the course you will need to know how to use basic 2D or 3D design software, since Luis will teach you step by step the process of creating your creature.

What materials do you need? You will need to have a computer with ZBrush 2018.1 and Keyshot installed.
